THIS DOCUMENTARY FILM has been in production for about three years and focuses on two themes in aging—stories of elders and caregiving.
The project is produced by Terry Lee, an associate professor of English,
with a specialization in journalism.
Focus #1:Elders' Stories
The documentary camera has recorded many stories and experiences of elders in an adult daycare center in Virginia. The film takes time to listen to stories from people in midlife-to-old age, to listen in as they reminisce, as they review their lives, revealing character, meaning and, oftentimes, wisdom.
Focus #2: Elder Caregiving
For about the past year, the filmmaker has focused on one mother and daughter, Carolyn and Brenda, starting out to simply document their lives. Carolyn lived with Brenda's family, but spent her days at daycare. Then, Carolyn fell and has had to move permanently into assisted living, though she contines to attend the daycare center.
Using the film for in-service training
When completed, the film will feature a candid view into the lives of the caregiver and the elder. The film will be useful for in-service training for healthcare professionals, stimulating discussion on topics such as these:
• How do I, as a caregiver, care for this family, not solely focusing on the physical aspects?
• How do physicians and healthcare workers feel about in-home caregivers? Angels? Demons?
• What is the best way to help caregivers?"
• What causes underlie "caregiver stress?"
• What emotional stresses and needs arise when transitioning caregiving from the extended family home to institutional care, such as assisted living?
• What filial / parental tensions arise in caregiving?
